Rake Edge

The inclined edge of a roof that runs from the eave to the ridge along a gable end. The rake is finished with drip edge, fascia, or trim to protect the exposed edge of the roof deck.

What Is a Rake Edge

The rake edge is the sloped border of a roof that runs diagonally from the eave to the ridge along a gable end, forming the inclined perimeter where the roof surface terminates over the building's sidewall. While the eave is the horizontal lower edge, the rake is the angled side edge. Both require drip edge installation, but they have different exposure conditions. The rake is more vulnerable to wind-driven rain because water can be pushed upward and under shingles along a sloped edge.

Rake Edge Components

A properly finished rake includes drip edge metal along the roof deck edge, a starter strip shingle for wind resistance, and a fascia or rake board covering the exposed rafter tails or truss ends. In some construction styles, the rake extends past the wall as an overhang. Damage to rake components during a storm event, including bent drip edge, missing rake fascia, or displaced starter strip, should each appear as separate line items in the Xactimate estimate.

Rake Edge in Insurance Estimates

Rake drip edge and eave drip edge may have different Xactimate line items depending on the profile and material. Measure the total linear feet of rake edge on each gable end and include drip edge, starter strip, and any rake trim or fascia board replacement. Wind damage along rakes is common because the edge is exposed to lateral wind forces, making it a frequent source of supplement items when the initial scope underestimates edge component damage.

Frequently asked questions

The rake edge is the sloped perimeter of the roof along the gable end, running from the eave up to the ridge. It is the inclined counterpart to the horizontal eave edge. Drip edge and trim are installed along the rake to seal and protect the exposed roof deck edge.

Yes. Drip edge along rakes should be a separate line item in Xactimate, measured in linear feet. It is required by code and by shingle manufacturer warranty specifications. If the adjuster omits rake drip edge, it is a valid supplement item.
