Drywall absorbs water quickly. If wet above the flood cut line (typically 2 feet), the affected sections usually require removal and replacement rather than drying in place.

These estimates follow general IICRC S500 guidelines. Actual drying times depend on ambient temperature, humidity, air flow, material thickness, and equipment placement. Always verify with moisture meter readings before declaring the structure dry. Learn more about water damage claims

IICRC water categories explained

Category 1: Clean Water

Water from a clean source that does not pose a health risk. Examples: broken supply lines, faucet leaks, melting ice. If left untreated for more than 48-72 hours, Category 1 water can escalate to Category 2 or 3.

Category 2: Grey Water

Water with some level of contamination that may cause illness if ingested. Examples: dishwasher or washing machine discharge, toilet overflow with urine only, sump pump failures. Requires additional antimicrobial treatment during drying.

Category 3: Black Water

Highly contaminated water that can cause serious illness or death. Examples: sewage backups, flooding from rivers or streams, toilet overflow with feces, any standing water older than 72 hours. Requires extensive safety precautions, removal of all porous materials, and professional remediation.
