Aluminum Coil Stock

Aluminum coil stock is flat-rolled aluminum sheet material used by roofers and siding installers to fabricate custom flashing, trim, and accessories on site by cutting and bending to the required profile.

Raw Material for Custom Fabrication

Aluminum coil stock is the flat-rolled sheet aluminum that roofing and siding professionals use to fabricate custom flashing, trim pieces, and accessories on the job site. Unlike pre-formed products that come in standard sizes and profiles, coil stock allows the installer to cut and bend pieces to the exact dimensions and angles needed for each specific application. A roofer with a brake and a roll of coil stock can fabricate step flashing, custom counter flashing, fascia wraps, and trim pieces that fit perfectly.

On insurance estimates, custom-fabricated aluminum pieces are a legitimate expense that should be captured.

Common Applications

Aluminum coil stock is used to fabricate fascia wraps (covering wood fascia boards with painted aluminum), soffit panels, custom flashing profiles at unique roof intersections, gutter end caps, and decorative trim. The material is lightweight, corrosion-resistant, available in pre-painted colors, and easy to work with standard sheet metal tools. It does not rust like steel and is less expensive than copper, making it the most practical choice for custom fabrication work.

When siding or trim is damaged and requires replacement, the estimate should include the coil stock material and the fabrication labor as part of the line item.

Estimating Custom Fabrication

Xactimate includes line items for pre-formed aluminum products (standard drip edge, standard fascia wrap) as well as custom fabrication line items. When the required piece does not match a standard product, the custom fabrication line item captures both the material and the labor to cut, bend, and install it. Custom work takes more time than installing pre-formed products, and the estimate should reflect that difference. Frequently asked questions

Roofers use aluminum coil stock to fabricate custom flashing pieces, trim, fascia wraps, and gutter accessories on site. It is cut and bent with hand tools or a brake to create the exact profile needed for each application.

Aluminum coil stock and the fabrication labor are typically included in the line items for the specific product being fabricated (custom flashing, fascia wrap, etc.) rather than as a separate raw material line item. If custom fabrication is needed, the appropriate Xactimate line item should include the fabrication labor.
